Summerside Storm’s new assistant coach Mike Leslie

Summerside Storm co-owners Duncan Shaw and Darren Mackay along with head coach Joe Salerno are pleased to announce that former Three Oaks Senior High Head Coach, Mike Leslie, has joined the Storm coaching staff for the upcoming season.

Originally from Nova Scotia and an Islander by choice, Mike was a classroom and physical education teacher at the elementary, intermediate and high school levels in both Nova Scotia and PEI over the past twenty-seven years. Leaving the classroom in 2006, Mike continued to impact student learning as a high school principal, before moving to the PEI Department of Education in 2008 where he has enjoyed working as Career Education Curriculum Specialist and, more recently, Secondary Programs Coordinator.

Over the past three decades, Mike has followed his passion of coaching basketball at the local, provincial and national levels, learning from and with high performance coaches and players at the elite level. He has represented two provinces at the Canada Games as both an official and a coach, is a former president and director of elite development with Basketball PEI, as well as an instructor with the Canada Basketball Atlantic High Performance Program. He has coached various provincial teams and high school programs in Nova Scotia and PEI, accumulating 14 provincial championships.

Mike has officiated at the AUS, CIS, and national level and recently completed a stint as an assistant coach with the UPEI Men’s Panthers. Mike’s love for teaching the fundamentals of the game has led many of his former players to reach their potential and achieve success on the court at college, university, national, and professional levels, and off the court as positive contributors to society.

Summerside Storm head coach and VP of Player Personnel Joe Salerno made the announcement that Dwight Brewington will be placed on the IR (injured reserve list).  Dwight is out with a pulled hip flexor that he injured during Friday’s game against Saint John.   He told me that he doesn’t expect to be out for more than a couple of weeks and that this type of injury just needs to take time to heal properly.  Brewington is one of the newer faces in the on the Storm.  He was called up from his home town Lynn, Massachusetts just a few weeks ago to immediately join the training camp which led to him locking down a spot on the roster.   During the Storm’s season opener Dwight scored 17 points in his 26 minutes played against the Kebs.

The Storm management were put in a tough situation today having to pull the trigger on signing Barrett Rasheem, knowing their starting shooting guard in Dwight would miss at least four games.   Rasheem played four season’s at Auburn University averaging over 11 points and 4.5 rebounds per game.  Barrett is 6’5″ guard weighing in at 220lbs, he is a native of Atlanta, Georgia.

Early today the Summerside Storm’s Official Facebook Page “Summerside Storm – Friends of Island Pro Basketball” announced they have picked a name for the new dance team and have announced the winner.  Jennifer Doucette was the first to enter the winning name, she will receive a pair of season tickets.  This dance team will practice a few times a week all season long.  The team held opened tryouts for anyone over the age 16.  They will perform at halftime and time outs during the home games this year at the Credit Union Place.   Finally the name of your new dance team is……THE STORM CHASERS.

The Summerside Storm are finally about to make an appearance on their home court tonight.  This highly anticipated game is sold out due to the NBL of Canada’s official sponsor Roger Communications buying over 4,000 tickets for local fans .

Saint John will be arriving in Summerside later today, while the Storm are resting for tonight’s game.  Former Detroit Piston Will Blalock will be playing for the Mill Rats tonight, he averaged 1.8 ppg and 1.2 apg in his 14 games as a pro.

Game time is 7 tonight in the Eastlink Arena at the Credit Union Place.

* I unfortunately was unable to make tonight’s game, but I had several people giving me great info and updates!

There was a very enthusiastic crowd on hand, at least 3,000 fans.

Great national anthem and pre game ceremony, the introductions were very exciting.

The Storm started the game off very weak, they quickly fell into a 0-11 hole, but fought back and went on a 9-0 run to make the score 11-9 for Saint John.

The Storm struggled from the perimeter all night long, missing the majority of their long range shots and 3′s.

It was a very physical contest, with lots of loose ball plays and floor dives.

The majority of the game the Mill Rats held the lead.

Storm only down 2 going to the 4th quarter.

In the end Saint John prevailed and snatched the game for the Storm.  Saint  John Wins 90-82.
