The Storm had no idea what to expect going into Halifax with nine new faces, but that didn’t seem to matter because Summerside pulled off a 105-97 win over the Rainmen today.

At 2 p.m. fans got their first look at the squad when PG Al Stewart; SG Greg Plummer, SF Chris Cayole, PF Louis Birdsong, and C Dokun Akingbade stepped up as the team’s five starters.

Summerside jumped out to a 7-0 lead and held it until the finals seconds of the first half when Hillary Haley, a Rainmen guard, hit a 3-point buzzer beater to give Halifax a 48-47 lead.

In the third quarter and early in the fourth, Halifax pulled ahead and led the game 92-78 with 8 minutes left to play.  However, the Storm went on a 27-5 run over the last eight minutes to steal a come from behind win.

Hillary Haley kept Halifax in the game with his 31 point effort that fell short down the stretch.

Head coach Joe Salerno was pleased his team showed character coming back in the game and he felt the win gave them the confidence to realize they could win in the NBL.  Salerno also singled out Antonio Ballard and Doug McKinney who he felt came up big defensively for the Storm late in the fourth quarter.  Salerno said the win was a good one but the team has plenty of work to do to get ready for the upcoming regular season.

Greg Plummer, who was signed by Summerside last week had an exceptional game, scoring 30 and grabbing 8 rebounds.  Louis Birdsong also put in a solid game, with a double double that gave him 18 points and 10 rebounds.   Avery Smith added 9 points, 9 rebounds and 5 assists.

The Storm are celebration their first win at Boston Pizza in Halifax before heading back home tonight.

Assuming cuts aren’t made the Storm will be returning to Summerside this weekend where they will hold their official training camp at the Slemon Park Canada Games Sports Center on Monday.

Coach Salerno seemed please but optimistic of further success saying,  “Good first day at tryout camp in New Hampshire. Guys are working hard, but we can always work harder.”

By the the first regular season game on Nov. 2 against the Mill Rats the Storm will be looking to have a twelve man roster all suited up and ready to go.

First of all here are the five players the Storm have put on their protected list; (meaning no other NBL teams can negotiate a deal with them) Al Stewart, Mike Williams, Lou McCroskey, Chris Cayole, and Eric Gilchrese.  *This list however doesn’t guarantee they will return to the Storm.

Here is a list of awards I’ve compiled looking back at the Summerside Storm’s first season in the NBL.

Opinions are my own, feel free to disagree.

Clutch Five (This would be my 5 guys on the court in a close game)

PG – Al Stewart

SG – Steph McDowell

SF – Chris Cayole

PF – Lou McCroskey

C – Mike Williams

 MVP – Mike Williams

Defender of the Year - Lou McCroskey

Team Player - Al Stewart

Community Award – Doug McKinney and Jared Carter

6th Man - Eric Gilchrese

Most Potential - Chris Cayole and Steph McDowell

Vocal Leader - Al Stewart

Most Improved - Troy Jackson

Best Scorer – Julian Allen

With all of those awards in consideration I feel the most vital player to the team’s success is Al Stewart.  Stewart’s on court abilities are well documented but it’s what he does off the court that makes him a needed piece.  Al is a second coach in a huddle during a time-out and the motivation in the locker room before every game.  I hope the Storm do everything in their power to make resigning Al Stewart a priority this off-season.

I was in Halifax this past weekend along with Summerside Storm All-Star Chris Cayole, who participated in the Eastlink 3 Point Shootout and the NBL All-Star game.  I’ve uploaded pictures in the ‘photo gallery’ on the menu at the top of the home page.
