Today I called Summerside’s newest shooting guard Greg Plummer and discussed his signing and the upcoming season for the Storm.

Brett Poirier:  When did you officially get signed by the team?

Greg Plummer:  Thursday of last week

BP:  When did you join the team?

GP:  I met the team on Friday last week when they were finishing up camp in New Hampshire.

BP: How was your first camp day with the team?

GP:  It was good, we got a lot of stuff done.  This being my first day, I had the chance to get up to speed with things.

BP:  Playing against Summerside last year do you notice any differences in the style of play?

GP:  Well this year’s team is totally different than it was last year.  That being said it’s still knowing the league and the types of players gives me some advantages.

BP: You’ve had a busy summer, tell me a little more about that.

GP:  Early this summer I played with Team Nike, and travelled to the World Basketball Festival in England.  We played team London and team Paris.  Team London was an all-star team made up of players from all over the UK, team Paris won the Jordan Brand Classic tournament in Europe.  We ended up winning both games when we were there.

BP:  Storm co-owner Duncan Shaw told me one of his goals for next season was to have a more athletic team then last year, from what you remember do you think that will happen?

GP:  Looking at all the players we have in camp right now, all I see is athleticism.  I’m not sure what all of the player capabilities from last year were but I can’t see it topping this.

BP:  You had high point averages with Saint John last season, do you see that being the case this year?

GP:  It’s hard to say, it’s all about the system you’re playing in.  Some nights I might, some nights I won’t score many points.  That’s not really what I look for anyway’s, if I’m needed to score I will, if I’m not then I’ll look to get my team mates involved.

BP:  How was your welcome to the city?

GP:  It was really nice, the night we arrived we had a dinner to meet city council and the mayor.  It was my first introduction to the people here.

BP:  What can the fans expect from you?

GP:  I’m going to do whatever it takes to help the team win.  I’m personally keyed in to putting a good brand of basketball out on the court and I think those who know the game and those who are learning it will really appreciate how much effort we will all put out.  I hope I can fulfil everyone’s expectations as far as having an enjoyable experience when you go to a Storm game.

BP:  Thank you for letting me be the first to interview you, and good luck the rest of the week at training camp!

GP:  Appreciate it!

Just one day into training camp the Storm already made a signing, former Saint John Mill Rat Greg Plummer caught the eye of coach Joe Salerno and Storm owners Duncan Shaw and Darren MacKay.

In a personal interview Plummer told me that he joined the team when they left New Hampshire and his first training session with the Storm was today.  Plummer said, “I will do what it takes to win, I want to put a good brand of basketball out.”

Salerno seemed very enthusiastic about the signing saying, “we really lacked perimeter shooting last season and Greg is one of the best in the league. With guys who can really shoot the ball like Greg and Chris Cayole, it makes it extremely tough for teams to help defensively.  When you have a quick and shifty point guard like Al Stewart getting into the lane, this can really wreak havoc on opponents.   He’s not just a shooter, he is a complete player, a veteran who brings an awful lot to the table.”

Plummer is a 6’3 shooting guard, weighing in at 185lbs.  He has experience playing in Mexico, Saint John, Halifax, and Vermont.  He played his college ball at Eckerd in Tampa Bay.  Plummer will bring valuable experience and leadership to the team being on the older end at 29.

Here’s a quick look at some of his numbers from last years stint with Saint John.

In 14 games played scored 249 points rounding out to about 18ppg.

In 2 games against Summerside averaged 20ppg

Scored a season high 40 against Quebec on January 5

Shot 44-99 from behind the arc last season, NBA type numbers.

In what was an action packed draft to say the least the Storm held on to their five picks and acquired a high pick via trade.

About fifteen minutes into the draft, from the Rogers Centre in Toronto, the Storm were on the clock with the third overall selection.  With the pick they selected James Hassell a 6’10 shot blocker who was co-owner Duncan Shaw’s first choice.

In a major shake up the Storm traded away Louie McCroskey and cash considerations for the Oshawa Power’s fourth overall pick Chad Gillaspy.  Gillaspy is a 6’6 220 pound shooting guard.

With the seventh pick via the Troy Gottselig trade to Halifax the Storm selected 6’3 guard Avery Smith from Wisconsin.

On to the second round where the Storm went with a 6’2 point guard Reggie Robinson out of Northwestern University.

In the third round with the nineteenth overall selection the Storm selected 6’6 shooting forward Michael Norwood.

And finally with the twenty third overall pick via trade with Halifax the Storm selected 6’6 forward Brandon Bush.

Meanwhile back in Summerside some 75 fans gathered at the Credit Union Place to watch a live streaming of the draft.  Storm forward Doug McKinney was on hand for the event along with Al Stewart and Chris Cayole via Skype.  The video call with Al Stewart from his Chicago home may have caused the most excitement when he announced that he would be returning to the Storm for the 2012-2013 NBL season.

During the draft party in Summerside, drafted players called over speaker phone from Toronto to get their first chance to introduced themselves to the fans.  Of the five players that called in; four claimed that defence is their strong suit and they all claimed to be hard working athletes.  However the most common question asked by Paul Schurman was “are you familiar with PEI?”  and you guessed it, all five said no!

This was a great night for the Storm, trading away McCroskey (an amzing defender) who was unlikely to return was a great move by the management.  With 3 of the 8 first round selections I’ll be expecting big things from our rookies.  But it’s important to remember about a possible diamond in the rough, Chris Cayole the Storms lone All Star wasn’t a first round selection!

Here is four of the Storm’s six draft picks.

Third overall pick Brandon Hassell

Fourth overall selection Chad Gillaspy

7th overall selection Avery Smith

Second round pick Reggy Robinson

19th overall pick Michael Norwood

23rd overall selection Brandon Bush

Storm coach Joe Salerno walking the sidelines at a home game

Summerside Storm Co-Owners Duncan Shaw and Darren MacKay have announcedCoach Joe Salerno has returned for the Storms second season.

Salerno led the Storm through their inaugural season which saw the team compile a record of 12-24 and finishing in 6th place in the 7 team league.

“We’re very excited to have Coach Salerno back with us for another year,” said Shaw. “We think he’s a great young coach that can both help us to win today and grow into an even better coach in the future.”

“Consistency is critical to improving on the court. We’ve been scouting all summer at several big events. We are running our own tryout combines. We are way ahead of last year and having consistency in our coaching staff has been critical to that progress.”

The Storm franchise will do everything it takes to make the NBL play-offs this season while continuing its commitment to the community by attempting to raise $50,000 for community groups and organizations throughout Prince Edward Island. The franchise raisedover $20,000 last season.

Eight teams make up two divisions of the NBL this season with the expansion Windsor Express joining the Central Division with the London Lightning (last year’s Champions), the Oshawa Power, and the Kebs, who have moved from Quebec City to Laval, Quebec.

The STORM, the Island’s Professional Basketball franchise, is gearing up for its second season in the NBL. Season, Corporate and Group ticket options along withticket prices are expected to be released in the near future offering Prince Edward Islanders another great chance to see pro sports at very affordable pricing.

Training camp opens October 15th and this year will be open to the public.

The Storm Centre, the Storm’s office location at Credit Union Place in Summerside, is now open for the coming season.

Meanwhile, the last of the four basketball camps the Storm are running this summer takes place at Souris Regional High School in Souris from August 20th to 23rd. Registrations are still being taken for this camp.
