Earlier today the NBL announced it’s All Star ballot and official voting  rules.

The Summerside Storm have six players on the ballet this year.

They are;

Julian Allen – Julian is a great scorer there’s no two ways about it, but in the last month in particular he’s been making the extra effort to find an open team-mate for a shot, ultimately that’s the difference between a good player and a great player.

Chris Cayole – We’ve all seen what this guy can do, that is when he’s actually playing.  Injuries have slowed down this sharpshooter but it doesn’t show in the voting results early on.  Don’t be fooled folks this is no Jason Kapono, Chris can do MUCH more then just shoot, but if  he’s in the three point competition I’m ‘all in’ on him.

Eric Gilchrese – Eric is another victim of the injury bug, playing in only 2/3 of the games this season.  This guy can light it up from anywhere on the court folks.  I would like to mention that Eric has a tendency to play better on the road (which is an excellent quality) so if your wondering why he’s on the ballot that’s why.

Stephen McDowell – This guy shoots to kill; Steph is a pure scorer, plain and simple.  My NBA comparison for him would be Derrick Rose because he can drop 30 like it’s nothing but also find a team-mate for a sweet dime.

Al Stewart – A fan favourite here in Summerside, and it’s not hard to see why.  Al is the Rajon Rondon of the NBL because of his double-double ability in terms of points and assist.  Al is a ‘must’ for the All Star game in my opinion and if he were not to be voting in I would lose a lot of confidence in fan voting.

Mike Williams – Possibly the best for last!  Did you guys know Mike’s middle name is “consistent”? Well, not really, but this guy is that and more.  Mike leads the team in rebounds and is second in assists, and after his five point spree in 4 second against London we now know he’s clutch too.

All six of those players deserve their spot on the ballot but there’s a few Storm players that weren’t mentioned and deserve a nod.

In my opinion those players are;

Louie McCroskey – Without a doubt the best defender on the team, he can guard almost any player on the court due to his size and quickness.

Jessan Gray – Jessan’s been one of the most consistent players for the Storm this year, it’s seems that whenever his number’s called for a big three he delivers.

Troy Jackson – This guy put up 39 points in a back-to-back road win in Saint John, if that’s not enough I don’t know what is.

There is a spot at the bottom of the voting pool where fans can ‘write in a player’ that’s where I would put either Louie, Jessan or Troy.

YOU CAN VOTE AS MANY TIMES AS YOU WANT

*Remember to better the odds of your favourite player only vote in Storm players.

***Correction tonight’s game will NOT be on Eastlink TV

The Halifax Rainmen are back in Summerside tonight for a 7pm game, and they’re bringing Eastlink TV with them.

The Storm have no easy task tonight welcoming the (16-6) Rainmen with four of their top players sidelined due to injuries.  Chris Cayole who’s been out for over a month is unlikely for tonight,  along with doubtful’s Mike Williams and Eric Gilchrese, Storm coach Joe Salerno said Julian Allen will be questionable for tonight.

If Eastlink TV isn’t available in your area you can always watch the game online at

Game in Moncton

The Storm fell to Moncton tonight in their second away game for the week. Final score was 110-95.

The injuries of some top players did not help Summerside.  Mike Williams was put out early in the first, adding to the injured list of Gilchrese, Cayole and Julian Allen, who injured his back in yesterday’s game against Halifax.

The top performance for the Storm went to Stephen McDowell with 24 points and Trayvon Lathan with 27 for Moncton.

Doug McKinney Ready For Minutes

Islander Doug McKinney may be seeing more floor time in this week’s home game against Halifax on Thursday night.

The Storm will be down to nine players due to a slew of injuries, including Mike Williams with a dislocated shoulder and Julian Allen with a lower back strain, both suffered in Halifax Sunday afternoon.  Williams and Allen join team mates Chris Cayole and Eric Gilchrese who are still out of play.

With Williams out, the Storm could potentially look to McKinney to be of help on the inside against Halifax’s big man Richard Anderson.

Coach Salerno had this to say in regards to McKinney’s performance last night’s performance in Moncton:

“Doug played hard in Moncton, all of our guys who were there played hard being so short handed. No one on this team showed any quit, and a lot of fight, including Doug. He rebounded the ball well, and was aggressive defensively. Hopefully he can carry some of that momentum over to Thursday’s game”.

On Thursday January 5 the Storm were in Moncton for the first time this season to face the Miracles.

The Storm pulled out their fifth road win this season, overcoming a late Moncton surge in the final minutes to hold on for the 119-104 win.  This is the Storm’s third straight win on the road, and they haven’t lost an away game since November.

Summerside had full control of Moncton from the beginning, leading 34-23 after the firstquarter, and they didn’t look back from there.

The Storm’s newest roster addition Stephen McDowell had a monster game, scoring 28 and going up for 10 rebounds.  Mike Williams had another solid game, with 19 points and 10 rebounds.  Eric Gilchrese had a good game filling in for injured point guard Al Stewart, he scored 16 and dished out 4 assists.

Darrell Wonge got it done again for Moncton, scoring 27.  Meanwhile newly acquired Miracle Akeem Wright had a superb game, he scored 20 and was a beast around the backboards, tallying a total of 16 rebounds.

There’s something about the Summerside Storm and third quarters that don’t agree with each other.  Once again they played a solid first half of basketball but crumbled in the second half.  London handed Summerside their third loss in row Friday, winning 115-105.  Over the past three games these are the Storm’s third quarter stats (opponent score – Storm score); in Saint John 34-17, vs. Quebec 32-16 and vs. London 29-17.  That brings us to a grand total of 95 third quarter points for opponents and 50 for Summerside.  Coach Salerno will really have to start emphasising how important it is to play all 48 minutes of the game.  The players should also realize that no lead is safe until the final buzzer sounds, it looked to me like they put cruise control on after half and couldn’t get back into the flow of things as the game progressed.

This now moves Summerside to 5-6 on the season and 3-3 at home.

Game Summary:

The last three games for Summerside is a case of same results, different opponent.  The Storm started the game hot, with the help of Chris Cayole’s 20 first half points the Lightning couldn’t come within range of the Storm.  Summerside held a decisive 62-48 lead going into the second half.

The second half was basically opposite the first.  London scored 67 in the third and forth, meanwhile Summerside added a subpar 43 points.

The good news Summerside will now have lots of time to rest up before next Thursday’s match up that will see the Rainmen in town.

Notable Stats:

London:  Eddie Smith scored 23, while DeAnthony Bowden added 20.

Summerside:  Chris Cayole had a game high 25, followed by backup point guard Eric Gilchrese with 22.  Julian Allen added 14 points and 10 boards.
