Earlier this week I had the opportunity to interview Chad Gillaspy from his home in Missouri via Skype.   Gillaspy was selected fourth overall in the 2012 NBL draft by the Oshawa Power but within minutes traded to the Storm for Louie McCroskey and cash considerations.  We discussed the NBL draft, his new team the Summerside Storm, and his previous basketball experiences.  Chad and I spent well over an hour talking back and fourth and I learned quite a bit about Summerside’s newest wing man.

Quick Info:                                                      Quick Stats: (2010-2011 last year of college)

Height: 6’7″                                                      Points per Game: 12.4

Weight: 215                                                     Rebounds per Game: 8.2

Position: Forward                                               Assists per Game: 1.4

College: Evangel (4 years)                                  Steals per Game: 1.5

Brett Poirier:  What was your first memory playing basketball?

Chad Gillaspy:   Probably in first grade, I hit my first three point shot.

BP:  Where did you attend high school? And did you play on the school basketball team?

CG:  I went to Miller High School which is a really small town about 30 minutes west of Springfield, Missouri.  And I played for the school team.

BP:  What type of role did you have on the team?

CG:   I did everything from play post to bring the ball up, I had a major role.

BP:  Is this your first go with a professional team?

CG:  Yes, I’m 24 and after four years of college it’s now or never.

BP:  Being 6’7″ you have more options then most at choosing you what position to play, what position do you primary play?

CG:  I’m a versatile player.  I can play inside and outside, that’s what I like to do.

BP:  What type of shooter are you?  Perimeter, mid range, inside?

CG:  In college I played power forward so I didn’t get many opportunities to shoot long range,  but in high school I shot from just about anywhere’s on the court.  It’s been four years but I’m trying to get my three point shot back.

BP:  Looking back at your weekend at the NBL draft combine, how do you personally feel about the way you preformed?

CG:  I know I can play better; but  for something like that where you come in and play with guys that you have no experiences with, and it’s such a quick process, I think I did okay in that regard.

BP:  Have you been keeping busy in the gym this summer?

CG:  Oh yes, I’ve been training every day this summer.

BP:  Have you touched base with coach Salerno yet?

CG:  Yea we spoke briefly at the draft but other then that not to much.  I’m sure I’ll connect with him before the training camp though.

BP:  What can you bring to this team that perhaps no one else can?

CG:  I have a good inside game and I’m working on my outside game so versatility will be something I can bring to the team.

BP:  Has anyone influence the way you play the game of basketball?

CG:  My family, they’re really into the sport and they love to watch.  They’ve always supported me from the bleachers.

BP:  Looking back at your experiences with the game what’s your most memorable moment?

CG:  The day I signed my college contract stands out to me, that’s something you work hard for your whole life and to finally see it happen feels pretty good.

BP:  What can the franchise expect from Chad Gillaspy?

CG:  I’m a very hard worker, coming from a small town, playing college and now professionally.  I’ve worked extremely hard to get where I am.   I can guarantee you that the effort, the hustle, will be there all the time.

BP:  I really appreciate you staying up past 2am to do this interview, I’m looking forward to meeting you in October.

CG:  Same to you Brett, thanks for doing this, see you in the Fall Canada!

Left to Right. Storm owner Darren MacKay, Storm owner Duncan Shaw, assistant coach Mike Leslie, head coach Joe Saleno.

In what was an action packed draft to say the least the Storm held on to their five picks and acquired a high pick via trade.

About fifteen minutes into the draft, from the Rogers Centre in Toronto, the Storm were on the clock with the third overall selection.  With the pick they selected James Hassell a 6’10 shot blocker who was co-owner Duncan Shaw’s first choice.

In a major shake up the Storm traded away Louie McCroskey and cash considerations for the Oshawa Power’s fourth overall pick Chad Gillaspy.  Gillaspy is a 6’6 220 pound shooting guard.

With the seventh pick via the Troy Gottselig trade to Halifax the Storm selected 6’3 guard Avery Smith from Wisconsin.

On to the second round where the Storm went with a 6’2 point guard Reggie Robinson out of Northwestern University.

In the third round with the nineteenth overall selection the Storm selected 6’6 shooting forward Michael Norwood.

And finally with the twenty third overall pick via trade with Halifax the Storm selected 6’6 forward Brandon Bush.

Meanwhile back in Summerside some 75 fans gathered at the Credit Union Place to watch a live streaming of the draft.  Storm forward Doug McKinney was on hand for the event along with Al Stewart and Chris Cayole via Skype.  The video call with Al Stewart from his Chicago home may have caused the most excitement when he announced that he would be returning to the Storm for the 2012-2013 NBL season.

During the draft party in Summerside, drafted players called over speaker phone from Toronto to get their first chance to introduced themselves to the fans.  Of the five players that called in; four claimed that defence is their strong suit and they all claimed to be hard working athletes.  However the most common question asked by Paul Schurman was “are you familiar with PEI?”  and you guessed it, all five said no!

This was a great night for the Storm, trading away McCroskey (an amzing defender) who was unlikely to return was a great move by the management.  With 3 of the 8 first round selections I’ll be expecting big things from our rookies.  But it’s important to remember about a possible diamond in the rough, Chris Cayole the Storms lone All Star wasn’t a first round selection!

Here is four of the Storm’s six draft picks.

Third overall pick Brandon Hassell

Fourth overall selection Chad Gillaspy

7th overall selection Avery Smith

Second round pick Reggy Robinson

19th overall pick Michael Norwood

23rd overall selection Brandon Bush

First of all here are the five players the Storm have put on their protected list; (meaning no other NBL teams can negotiate a deal with them) Al Stewart, Mike Williams, Lou McCroskey, Chris Cayole, and Eric Gilchrese.  *This list however doesn’t guarantee they will return to the Storm.

Here is a list of awards I’ve compiled looking back at the Summerside Storm’s first season in the NBL.

Opinions are my own, feel free to disagree.

Clutch Five (This would be my 5 guys on the court in a close game)

PG – Al Stewart

SG – Steph McDowell

SF – Chris Cayole

PF – Lou McCroskey

C – Mike Williams

 MVP – Mike Williams

Defender of the Year - Lou McCroskey

Team Player - Al Stewart

Community Award – Doug McKinney and Jared Carter

6th Man - Eric Gilchrese

Most Potential - Chris Cayole and Steph McDowell

Vocal Leader - Al Stewart

Most Improved - Troy Jackson

Best Scorer – Julian Allen

With all of those awards in consideration I feel the most vital player to the team’s success is Al Stewart.  Stewart’s on court abilities are well documented but it’s what he does off the court that makes him a needed piece.  Al is a second coach in a huddle during a time-out and the motivation in the locker room before every game.  I hope the Storm do everything in their power to make resigning Al Stewart a priority this off-season.

In-front 4017 fans, the largest crowd pro-basketball has ever seen on PEI, the Summerside Storm took a hit by losing to the Quebec Kebs 123-114.

But Monday’s game was about more than just basketball.  The Islanders Helping Islanders theme was strong throughout the crowd this afternoon, with the focus being on the Bring Bobby Jo Home Campaign. When the buckets were passed around, the crowd came up with $1554, this will be added to ticket sales from last week that were also sold in support of Bobbi Jo. There was a special cheque presentation to The Three Oaks High School basketball program for 50/50 funds raised so far, totally $4058, and the 50/50 take was also a record at $3559.

Back to the game.  Quebec took advantage of Summerside’s reckless play early on, gaining a 6 point lead at the end of the first quarter, mainly due to Ralphy Holmes and Ricky Volcy combining for 20.

Around the half way point of the second quarter Summerside got their offence in order and took full control of the remaining six minutes of the quarter.  By half time the Storm led 57-52 over Quebec.

The third quarter momentum was clearly in favour of the Quebec Kebs, Summerside was outscored by them 34-24 in the quarter.

In the highest scoring quarter of the game Summerisde couldn’t manage to get any stops late.  With Summerside down double digits with only minutes remaining in the game their defence failed them and they were unable to take this one from Quebec.

Ralphy Holmes was just 2 assists away from a triple double Monday, scoring 32 and elevation for 11 boards; meanwhile, James “Boo” Jackson was getting it done for the Kebs, he scored 30 and secured 14 rebounds.

Summerside was led in scoring by Louie McCroskey with 23.  Mike Williams had 12 rebounds and 18 points.

The Storm play next on March 2nd at home, 7:30pm, taking on The Oshawa Power.  This will be the final home game for the Storm.

Earlier today the NBL announced it’s All Star ballot and official voting  rules.

The Summerside Storm have six players on the ballet this year.

They are;

Julian Allen – Julian is a great scorer there’s no two ways about it, but in the last month in particular he’s been making the extra effort to find an open team-mate for a shot, ultimately that’s the difference between a good player and a great player.

Chris Cayole – We’ve all seen what this guy can do, that is when he’s actually playing.  Injuries have slowed down this sharpshooter but it doesn’t show in the voting results early on.  Don’t be fooled folks this is no Jason Kapono, Chris can do MUCH more then just shoot, but if  he’s in the three point competition I’m ‘all in’ on him.

Eric Gilchrese – Eric is another victim of the injury bug, playing in only 2/3 of the games this season.  This guy can light it up from anywhere on the court folks.  I would like to mention that Eric has a tendency to play better on the road (which is an excellent quality) so if your wondering why he’s on the ballot that’s why.

Stephen McDowell – This guy shoots to kill; Steph is a pure scorer, plain and simple.  My NBA comparison for him would be Derrick Rose because he can drop 30 like it’s nothing but also find a team-mate for a sweet dime.

Al Stewart – A fan favourite here in Summerside, and it’s not hard to see why.  Al is the Rajon Rondon of the NBL because of his double-double ability in terms of points and assist.  Al is a ‘must’ for the All Star game in my opinion and if he were not to be voting in I would lose a lot of confidence in fan voting.

Mike Williams – Possibly the best for last!  Did you guys know Mike’s middle name is “consistent”? Well, not really, but this guy is that and more.  Mike leads the team in rebounds and is second in assists, and after his five point spree in 4 second against London we now know he’s clutch too.

All six of those players deserve their spot on the ballot but there’s a few Storm players that weren’t mentioned and deserve a nod.

In my opinion those players are;

Louie McCroskey – Without a doubt the best defender on the team, he can guard almost any player on the court due to his size and quickness.

Jessan Gray – Jessan’s been one of the most consistent players for the Storm this year, it’s seems that whenever his number’s called for a big three he delivers.

Troy Jackson – This guy put up 39 points in a back-to-back road win in Saint John, if that’s not enough I don’t know what is.

There is a spot at the bottom of the voting pool where fans can ‘write in a player’ that’s where I would put either Louie, Jessan or Troy.

YOU CAN VOTE AS MANY TIMES AS YOU WANT

*Remember to better the odds of your favourite player only vote in Storm players.
