Summerside Storm’s new assistant coach Mike Leslie

Summerside Storm co-owners Duncan Shaw and Darren Mackay along with head coach Joe Salerno are pleased to announce that former Three Oaks Senior High Head Coach, Mike Leslie, has joined the Storm coaching staff for the upcoming season.

Originally from Nova Scotia and an Islander by choice, Mike was a classroom and physical education teacher at the elementary, intermediate and high school levels in both Nova Scotia and PEI over the past twenty-seven years. Leaving the classroom in 2006, Mike continued to impact student learning as a high school principal, before moving to the PEI Department of Education in 2008 where he has enjoyed working as Career Education Curriculum Specialist and, more recently, Secondary Programs Coordinator.

Over the past three decades, Mike has followed his passion of coaching basketball at the local, provincial and national levels, learning from and with high performance coaches and players at the elite level. He has represented two provinces at the Canada Games as both an official and a coach, is a former president and director of elite development with Basketball PEI, as well as an instructor with the Canada Basketball Atlantic High Performance Program. He has coached various provincial teams and high school programs in Nova Scotia and PEI, accumulating 14 provincial championships.

Mike has officiated at the AUS, CIS, and national level and recently completed a stint as an assistant coach with the UPEI Men’s Panthers. Mike’s love for teaching the fundamentals of the game has led many of his former players to reach their potential and achieve success on the court at college, university, national, and professional levels, and off the court as positive contributors to society.

Over the past week I’ve been shooting video with the intention to find how the Summerside Storm have impacted the community.

Interviews with Summerside Mayor Basil Stewart, Storm Co-Owner Duncan Shaw and footage of the final seconds of the Storm’s heartbreaking loss at home to the Oshawa Power.

Head coach Joe Salerno made a surprise announcement yesterday when he announced the Storm were bringing Doug McKinney, however this news comes at a price.  However, to bring Doug back; Summerside had to release Michael Dale.  Michael Dale was an original member of the Storm’s training camp.

Team spokesman Bill Schurman said Dale’s character wasn’t the right fit for the team.  Schurman also mentioned that they’ve looked all over North America for any players that could replace Dale and they kept coming back to Doug.  He stressed that they didn’t call him back because he’s an Islander, but it was merely because he was the best fit for the team and community.

Tomorrow I will be posting a season preview.  It will include predictions, key lineups,  players to watch, notable games and much more!

The Storm face off against the Quebec Kebs on Thursday night at 7pm in the Eastlink Arena of the Credit Union Place.

It was one to remember at UPEI on Friday night,  for more then just one reason to.  It was the Storm’s first ever pre-season game.  Doug Mckinney and Sherone Edwards, both former Panthers, made their return to the Island.  Former NBA player Rodney Buford was in uniform for the Rainmen.  And UPEI was packed with excited Island basketball fans.

Prior to tip off co-owner Duncan Shaw addressed the crowd by saying how thrilled he was to feature the Storm in a game at UPEI.

Moments later the players and coaches lined up for the national anthem.  Immediately following was tip off.

Summerside got off to a strong start, they took a solid 12 point lead into the second quarter.

Halifax slowly chipped away at their deficit in the second quarter.  The score was 49 Storm 47 Rainmen.

In the third quarter the tempo began to change.  Former NBA’er Rodney Buford was lights on and helped give his Rainmen a 78 – 74 lead.

In the first several minutes of the fourth Halifax still held on to their slim lead.  But in the final few minutes of the game it turned around, Storm coaches Joe Salerno and Mev Bahonjic pulled out a line-up similar to the starting consisting of Al Stewart, Eric Gilchrese, Chris Cayole, Louie McCroskey and Jessan Gray.  Led by Al Stewart at PG the Storm charged back, down by only 2 with a minute left.  The Storm had possession of the basketball running a one on one  break away situation, when out of no where a Halifax player came up and swatted Eric Gilchrese’s layup which later determind the result of the game.  Storm 96  Rainmen 100.

Top Scorers

Storm:                                        Rainmen:

Eric Gilchrese – 16                        Taliek Brown -24

Inactive were: Dwight Brewington, Mike Williams, Xavier Hansbro.

When the final scored was announced the fans applauded the efforts of their Storm.  ”They played a good hard game of basketball today” said one fan.  ”I’m buying season tickets” one man behind me said.   Many people were impressed with the speed of the game and the athleticism of the players.  I believe I’m speaking for many when I say, I cannot wait for the regular season to begin.

The Storm are in prep mode right now, for the team’s first ever pre season game.  Their challenge will come against the Halifax Rainmen tonight at the UPEI Sports Centre.  The game is at a discounted price, $7 for adults and $5 for students.  The management and coaching staff feel that expanding the distance where the Storm play this year is important for Island basketball.  Last week the Storm took part in an inter-squad game at Westile High School which also treated the fans to a halftime dunk contest.  This game will be slightly more competitive than lasts weeks, but it comes with the territory of moving closer to the season.  Tonight’s game will have exclusive importance for two players;  Doug Mckinny and Sherone Edwards.  Their both former UPEI Panther’s and each spent their entire collegiate career at the school.  However not all players are active tonight.  As far as I know, Xavier Hansbro is out due to injury and Dwight Brewington will not be on the Island due to travel.  UPEI staff, students and the city of Charlottetown are responding very positivity to having the Storm for the night.

It will be a great night of basketball for the entire Island, hope to see you all there!
