The Summerside Storm are sad to report that Xavier Hansbro has decided to return home due to personal family reasons.

The 6’10” 225lbs forward averaged ten points per game, shot 42% from the three-point line, and averaged 5 rebounds per game. Head Coach Joe Salerno had this to say about Xavier’s leaving:

“It’s unfortunate X has decided to leave the team at this point in our season. He is a good player who has come up in some big spots for us in recent games. We have a deep bench and now this just gives some other guys the chance to step up in his absence. We wish Xavier and his family the best.”

The Storm play two away games this week, tonight in Oshawa, and Thursday in London, both at 7pm, catch the action live at www.stormbasketball.ca. Next home game is February 9th, 7pm.

Xavier Hansbro

In front of 1140 fans at Laval University in Quebec City on Sunday afternoon the Summerside Storm were outwitted by a blistering performance from the Quebec Kebs.  After six periods of thrilling NBL action the game finally concluded with a score of 145-136 for the Kebs.

The first half was controlled by Quebec, their hot shooting was the essential reason that they held a 63-52 lead at halftime.

The Storm were clearly ready to put the first half behind them when the second half began, they bulldozed all over Quebec in the third, out scoring them 32-16, that gave Summerside a 84-79 at the end of the third.

The forth quarter right up until the final three minutes in the second overtime was an exchange of blows for both teams.  With very little defence both teams were virtually able to score every time down the court.  The score remained very close for the final 22 minutes of the game, due to the dynamite offence.  In the final few minutes of the double overtime Quebec finally decided to play defence and it really paid off; Summerside was thrown off guard and didn’t an answer for it, Quebec’s defence held the Storm to only seven points in the OT period and was the reason they won the game.

Storm coach Joe Salerno couldn’t have asked for more balanced scoring attack; eight of his eleven players scored in double digits, which was led by Xavier Hansbro and Troy Jackson each with 20, and Al Stewart was being generous all night handing out twelve dimes.

Quebec was led by their best scorer Ralphy Holmes with 28, Ricky Volcy had 21 and center Aaron Spears scored 20.

The Storm play next at home, January 20th at 7:30pm against the Oshawa Power, it’s their date for Cure on the Court, a breast cancer fundraiser, fans are encouraged to wear pink!

The Storm made two more changes to their roster yesterday.

The team signed Xavier Hansbro and traded Troy Gottselig to Halifax Rainmen for 1st and 3rd round draft picks in 2012 NBL Canada draft. Hansbro had played with The Storm for the first two games of the season before having to return home for personal reasons.

Xavier Hansbro averaged over 14 ppg in his two with the Storm.

The Storm play twice this week at Credit Union Place, Thursday at 7pm when they take on The Halifax Rainmen, and again on Friday at 7:30pm taking on The Moncton Miracles.

Jared Carter as a Member of the Kentucky Wildcats

This weekend 6’10″ center Xavier Hansbro made the tough decision to go home to his family in Tennessee for what’s being called “family personal reasons”.  This comes as a bit of a surprise considering Xavier scored 19 points in his last outing against Saint John.   However the Storm scored big when it comes to match-ups in the paint.   Jared Carter, a 7’2″ center out of the University of Kentucky has lots of experience and accomplishments already under his belt.  The former Wildcat was the defensive player of the year last year in the PBL while being named to the Second All Team and making the All-Defensive Team.  Carter averaged 4.4 minutes per game where he played four years for the UK Wildcats.

Summerside head coach said he was disappointed to see Hansbro head home but understood perfectly why he had to leave.

Jared Carter is a great addition to this team; he will provide extra size, strength and defence down low.  Although it’s unfortunate Xavier had to leave the team,  he was starting to mesh nicely with the system after just 2 games.  He will be missed, mostly at the offensive end of the court, where he had an advantage over Carter.

This is the final 12 roster members for the Summerside Storm.
